Shopify Bundles app limitations: what the free app can and can't do

The real limits of Shopify's free Bundles app: products, variants, discounts, mix-and-match and inventory, and what to do about each.

Facts checked against Shopify's Help Center on 4 Oct 2026

Short answer: Shopify's free Bundles app builds fixed bundles and multipacks of up to 30 components, with at most 3 options and 100 variants per bundle. It accepts regular discount codes and automatic discounts, but it has no tiered "buy more, save more" pricing and no mix-and-match, and the bundle price doesn't update when a component's price changes.

Below, each limit links to Shopify's own documentation, followed by what to do when you hit it, native workarounds first. We make a bundle app (Cobundle), so we have a stake in this, which is why every claim about Shopify Bundles links to a source you can check.

Limit 1: how many products a bundle can hold

Shopify's documentation sets the caps at 30 components for a fixed bundle, 150 for dynamic bundles, 2,000 units per component, and 3 options and 100 variants in total per bundle (source).

The cap most stores hit first is 100 variants: three products with five sizes and four colors each already exceed it.

What to do instead:

  • Native first: combine matching options (one "Size" picker for every item; values must match exactly), or split one large bundle into smaller ones.
  • App route: a discount-based bundle app doesn't create a bundle product, so there's no bundle variant limit. Shoppers add the real products and the discount applies at checkout.

Limit 2: pricing is fixed, and it doesn't follow your catalog

The App Store listing shows fixed pricing as the pricing model (listing). Shopify's Help Center also notes that when a bundled product's price changes, whether edited by hand or imported, the bundle price doesn't update. You have to edit it yourself (source).

What to do instead:

  • Native first: keep a list of bundles and their components, and re-check bundle prices after every price change. Tedious, but fine for a small catalog.
  • App route: a percentage discount applied at checkout is calculated from current prices every time, so there's nothing to sync.

Limit 3: discounts work, but there are no tiers

Can Shopify Bundles have a discount? Yes. Shopify says bundles support "discount codes and automatic discounts, including supported discount combinations." You can discount a bundle in three ways: a discount code, a lower bundle price, or Cart Transform for customized bundles (source).

What it doesn't have is tiered pricing, such as "buy 2, save 10%; buy 3, save 15%." Neither the listing nor the Help Center describes quantity tiers. For that you need a discount that changes as the order grows: a volume-discount app if you mean more of the same item, or a bundle app that tiers by how many different products are in the bundle. Our guide to adding tiered bundle discounts on Shopify covers the options.

"Shopify Bundles not working with discounts": the usual causes

If a discount ignores your bundle, check these before anything else:

  1. The discount targets the components, not the bundle. Shopify says to include the parent bundle product in product- or collection-specific discounts. "The discount won't apply if you select only the component products" (source).
  2. Combinations aren't enabled. Two discounts only stack if each one allows the other. Stacking more than one product discount on the same line item is Shopify Plus only (discount combinations).
  3. You're at the 25 automatic discount cap. Shopify allows 25 active automatic discounts, and app-based discounts count toward that total (automatic discounts).
  4. The discount appears "split" across items. This is expected. Shopify calculates the discount on the bundle, then shares it across the components by price (source).

If the discount shows in the cart but disappears at checkout, see why bundle discounts don't show at checkout.

Limit 4: no mix-and-match

Shopify states it plainly: "The Shopify Bundles app doesn't support mix-and-match bundles." For mix-and-match it points merchants to third-party apps, or, on Shopify Plus only, to a custom build with the Bundles APIs (source).

What to do instead:

  • Native first: if a few combinations cover most orders, build each as its own fixed bundle. It doesn't scale, but it's free.
  • Plus with a developer: build your own with the Bundles APIs.
  • App route: use a function-based app where the shopper picks any N items from a pool you choose. See how mix-and-match bundle discounts work.

Limit 5: inventory, purchase options and operations

These tend to surface after launch, so check them first:

  • Inventory is tracked by overall stock, not by location (source). This matters if you fulfil from more than one location.
  • No subscriptions, pre-orders, or try-before-you-buy, and no Shopify Subscriptions app (source).
  • Bundles can't contain other bundles, and can't include custom products.
  • No import, export, or bulk editing. Changing a component's SKU means deleting the bundle and building it again.
  • Bundles can't be used in exchanges, and can't be marked final sale in return rules.
  • An upgraded checkout is required. checkout.liquid customizations aren't compatible.
  • Bundled products don't appear under Search & Discovery option filters (source).
  • Check sales-channel support for your setup. The Bundles limitations list says Online Store or headless storefronts only, while Shopify announced POS support in September 2024.

What to do instead: these are structural, so no setting changes them. If one blocks you, the alternative is not creating a bundle product at all: shoppers buy the normal products and a discount does the bundling, so inventory, SKUs and fulfillment work as they do for everything else in your store. One caveat: a discount-based app still uses one of your 25 automatic discount slots and follows the same combination rules as any other discount.

When native Shopify Bundles is enough

Stay on the free app if all of these are true:

  • You sell fixed sets or multipacks at a single price.
  • Each bundle fits inside 30 components and 100 variants.
  • You don't need tiers, mix-and-match, or subscriptions.
  • You don't mind updating bundle prices by hand after a price change.

It's free, built by Shopify, and reports bundle total sales, bundle orders, top total sales and most ordered (source). If that covers your offer, don't add another app. For a fuller side-by-side, see our Shopify native Bundles alternative comparison.

Where an app like Cobundle fits

Cobundle covers the cases where the native app stops:

  • Tiered discounts by the number of different products in the bundle (add 2, save 10%; add 3, save 15%) as a percentage or fixed amount, or a set price for a fixed set. Quantity breaks on a single product aren't supported.
  • Three bundle types: fixed set, mix-and-match (build-a-box style), and anchor product plus add-ons.
  • Real products in the cart. Discounts are Shopify automatic discounts built on Shopify Functions, so inventory, SKUs and fulfillment don't change.
  • No theme code. The widget is a theme app block, so uninstalling leaves nothing behind. There's also a setup checklist and analytics for views, adds and conversion.

There's a Free plan; paid plans are $9.99 and $19.99 a month with a 14-day trial.

FAQ

What are the main limitations of the Shopify Bundles app?

It makes fixed bundles and multipacks only (up to 30 components, 3 options and 100 variants per bundle). There's no tiered pricing, mix-and-match, subscriptions or bulk editing, and inventory is tracked by overall stock rather than by location.

What is the maximum number of products in a Shopify bundle?

Up to 30 components for a fixed bundle, with up to 2,000 units per component. Shopify lists a higher limit of 150 components for dynamic bundles. Every bundle is also capped at 3 options and 100 variants in total.

Can Shopify Bundles have a discount?

Yes. Bundles work with discount codes and automatic discounts, including supported combinations. You can also set a lower bundle price. Tiered "buy more, save more" pricing isn't offered.

Why isn't my discount applying to my Shopify bundle?

Usually the discount targets the component products instead of the parent bundle product, which Shopify says must be included. Also check combinations and the 25 active automatic discount limit.

Does Shopify Bundles support mix-and-match?

No. Shopify points merchants to third-party apps for mix-and-match, or to a custom build with the Bundles APIs on Shopify Plus.

Do I need Shopify Plus to use Shopify Bundles?

No. The app is free on all plans. Plus is only needed to build custom mix-and-match bundles with Shopify's Bundles APIs, or to stack more than one product discount on the same line item.
