How to add tiered bundle discounts on Shopify

Set up tiered 'buy more, save more' bundle discounts on Shopify that apply automatically at checkout. No theme code.

Tiered bundle discounts ("add 2 products to the bundle, save 10%; add 3, save 15%") are a common way to raise average order value. The catch: Shopify's free Bundles app doesn't do them. This guide explains why, then walks through how to actually set them up so the discount applies automatically at checkout without editing your theme.

What "tiered bundle discount" actually means

A tiered discount changes the reward based on how much the customer buys. A few common shapes:

  • Quantity tiers on one product: buy 2 of the same item → 10% off, buy 4 → 20% off. This is usually called a volume discount or quantity break.
  • Bundle-size tiers: pick 3 different products → save $10, pick 5 → save $20.
  • Anchor + add-on tiers: buy the main product, add 1 accessory → 10% off, add 2 different accessories → 15% off.

The common thread is escalating value the more the shopper commits. That escalation is exactly the mechanic a single fixed bundle price can't express.

Many bundle apps, Cobundle included, tier by how many different products are in the bundle. If what you want is "buy more of the same item, pay less per unit", look for a volume-discount app instead: Cobundle doesn't do same-product quantity breaks.

Why Shopify's native Bundles app can't do this

Shopify's native Bundles app is built for fixed bundles and multipacks. Its pricing options are a single set bundle price or a discount synced to component prices. There's no rule engine for "if quantity ≥ X, then discount Y." There's also no true mix-and-match, so you can't tier by how many items a customer chose from a pool.

That's not a knock on the app; it's just out of scope. If you only need one fixed set at one price, the native app is often the right call and you can stop reading here. If you need tiers, you need something that can run conditional discount logic.

The mechanism that makes tiered discounts work: Shopify Discount Functions

The dependable way to run tiered discounts on Shopify today is a Shopify Discount Function. This is a small program that executes inside Shopify's checkout and, in a few milliseconds, decides whether a discount applies and how large it is. Because it runs server-side at checkout, the discounted price is calculated by Shopify itself, not by code on your cart page.

Apps from the Shopify App Store that include a discount function work on every Shopify plan (Basic through Plus). You don't have to be on Plus, and you don't touch your theme. Because Shopify itself applies the discount in checkout, a function-based bundle discount shows up at checkout the way you'd expect rather than depending on code in your cart page.

You have two realistic paths to a discount function:

  1. Build one yourself. Shopify only lets stores on Shopify Plus use custom apps that contain Shopify Function APIs (Shopify Functions availability), so this path means Plus plus a developer. Full control and no monthly app fee, but it's real engineering and ongoing maintenance.
  2. Install an app that ships a discount function and gives you a UI to configure tiers. Faster, no code.

The rest of this guide covers the no-code path using a bundle app. We make one (Cobundle); the steps are similar across function-based apps.

Step-by-step: set up a tiered bundle discount (no code)

1. Decide your tiers before you touch anything

Write them down first. For example:

Different products in the bundleDiscount
210% off
315% off
520% off

Keep it to two or three tiers so the offer stays easy to read.

2. Install a function-based bundle app

From the Shopify App Store, install a bundle app that explicitly says it applies discounts at checkout via Shopify Functions (not "cart scripts" or "draft orders"). This matters: it means Shopify applies the discount in its own checkout.

3. Choose the bundle type

Match the type to your offer:

  • Fixed set: a predefined group sold together. It's all-or-nothing, so it gets one discount rather than tiers.
  • Mix-and-match: customer picks N from a curated pool (great for "build your own 3-pack"). See how mix-and-match works.
  • Anchor + add-ons: a main product with optional extras.

4. Enter your discount tiers

Configure each tier with a type and value:

  • Percentage (e.g. 15% off): scales with cart value, good for higher-priced items.
  • Fixed amount (e.g. $20 off): concrete and easy to communicate.
  • Set price (e.g. "all three for $50"): a round-number price for the whole bundle. In Cobundle this is available for fixed sets only; other apps vary.

5. Set your discount combinations

In Shopify, each discount belongs to a class (product, order, or shipping), and two discounts only stack if each one explicitly allows the other's class. If you want your bundle discount to combine with, say, a free-shipping promo, enable that in the combinations settings. If you don't, shoppers get one or the other. Decide this deliberately: it's the single most common cause of "why didn't my discount stack?"

Also worth knowing: Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, and outside Shopify Plus only one product discount can apply per line item (discount combinations). Keep your active-discount list tidy.

6. Test in an incognito window

Add the qualifying number of different products to your cart and go to checkout in a private/incognito window, logged out. Testing while logged into your admin can produce misleading results. Confirm each tier fires at the right threshold and the math is correct.

When tiered bundles are the wrong tool

Tiered discounts train customers to wait for the bigger tier and can erode margin if your unit economics are thin. They work best when:

  • Your gross margin comfortably absorbs the top tier, and
  • The extra units are incremental (the customer wouldn't have bought them anyway).

If you're really trying to move one specific slow SKU, a straightforward markdown or a "buy X get Y" offer may beat a tiered bundle. And if a single fixed price covers your needs, don't add tiers for their own sake.

FAQ

Can I add tiered bundle discounts with Shopify's free Bundles app?

No. The native app supports a fixed bundle price or a component-synced discount, but not tiers that grow with the bundle. You'll need an app with a discount function, or a custom-built one.

Do tiered discounts require Shopify Plus?

No. Apps from the Shopify App Store that include a discount function work on all plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus). Plus is only needed if you build your own custom app with Shopify Function APIs.

Will setting up tiered discounts change my theme?

No. Function-based discounts are applied at checkout by Shopify, so there's no theme code to add.

Why isn't my tiered discount stacking with my other promo?

Because discounts only combine when each one allows the other's class in its combinations settings. Check that both discounts opt into combining. Note that outside Shopify Plus, only one product discount can apply per line item.

How many tiers should I offer?

Usually two or three. Fewer rungs keep the offer easy to understand at a glance.
